Meet Ellis

Training alongside Coach Carl and teammates for many years now, Ellis is really committed to his martial arts craft.

Helping everyone and anyone, Ellis is warm-hearted and able to adapt to any demographic that walks into our gym. He is always scanning every area of the gym from the class structure, circuits, and group drills to one-on-one pad work. A very humble person that will always make sure he lets you know how well your doing, or what the slight adjustment may add here and there. He’s an essential part of our team and always leads by example.

"I am only early into my martial arts path, but it has taught me so much in such a small amount of time. In the beginning, I used to spend five days a week training in gyms, then I turned more to training alongside Coach Carl and his younger brother Ryan. Ryan taught me a lot, and I bonded well with Carl when I began to train with him a few years back.

"It wasn’t long before I fell in love with the sport and the simple teachings to others, which I now use in everyday life. One of the main teachings I’ve learnt is to compare myself to the person I was yesterday, nobody else; and if something doesn’t click straight away, to know that through consistency and a focused mindset, it will always pay off. This naturally led me to develop into a coaching position after training non-stop at Shadowbox since opening up.

"It was a challenge at first - stepping into the official assistant role but I love to thrive on being able to accommodate teachings to various ages. But now the fulfilment I get from seeing the younger ones constantly trying and taking after the fine example the gym sets; it really is a sight to see. I’m still very early on in my career as a martial artist is how I view it, it's very much a practice for life and can be applied in a multitude of ways outside of the gym; especially surrounding mental health. I have found training, in particular martial arts, to be the best therapy for overcoming such challenges."
